Brick by Brick - UK Charity in Malawi

Brick by Brick has commenced its building in Malawi.

Malawi is a poor landlocked country with a GDP of $3.574 bn, $256.6 per capita (est 2007), which makes it one of the poorest countries on the planet.

It has little mineral wealth and limited agriculture. It is far from a port which makes its agricultural exports uncompetitive on world markets and imported building materials very expensive.

The rural communities survive on subsistence agriculture with limited cash crops of tea, coffee and tobacco.

Literacy is low and AIDS is prevalent, near the highest in Africa, with a life expectancy of 38-40 years.

Nevertheless it is a peaceful country with no obvious tribal divisions. Although the country is desperately short of schools there is wide awareness of the importance of education.
